EBRD and Energy Community Secretariat publish joint policy guidelines for renewable energy auctions By Svitlana Pyrkalo 26 Mar 2018 Joint Policy Guidelines on Competitive Selection and Support for Renewable Energy. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Energy Community Secretariat (EnCS) have issued today joint Policy Guidelines to help countries design and implement competitive selection processes for supporting renewable energy.  The Policy Guidelines have been prepared in collaboration with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Across the world, countries are using competitions to set the level of support for, and select the recipients of, renewable electricity.  These competitions are driving down the cost of renewable energy with great success, in many cases to below the cost of conventional power.  But careful design of these competitions is crucial, both to ensure their success and to avoid distorting…

Latest WB6 electricity monitoring report shows stagnation

Informacion
Latest WB6 electricity monitoring report shows stagnation  28 March 2018 The Secretariat’s WB6 report on electricity points to limited progress achieved by the Contracting Parties during the latest monitoring period despite the renewed interest in the implementation of regional solutions for day-ahead market processes and coupling. Further implementation of the connectivity reform measures largely depends on major institutional changes at the national level. Foremost, this includes finalising the unbundling of transmission and distribution system operators and appointing day-ahead market operators. The lack of progress is also notable with respect to wholesale and retail market opening. Development during the reporting period was overshadowed by deviations in the ENTSO-E electricity system originating from the EMS/KOSTT dispute, the most serious obstacle to regional electricity market operation. The Western Balkan 6 Electricity Monitoring Report…

European Electric Vehicle Batteries Summit 2018

Informacion
European Electric Vehicle Batteries Summit 2018, 20th & 21st June in Munich, Germany Maximising the Efficiency of the Batteries while Optimising the Production Costs ACI’s Electric Vehicle Batteries Summit will be taking place in Munich, Germany, on 20th & 21st June 2018. The two-day event will bring together key industry stakeholders from the battery manufacturers, car manufacturers, energy storage component material developers, technology providers, grid operators, policy makers, environmental bodies, consultants. The concept of battery electric vehicles is to use charged batteries on board vehicles for propulsion. Battery electric cars are becoming more and more attractive with the advancement of new battery technology (Lithium Ion) that have higher power and energy density (i.e., greater possible acceleration and more range with fewer batteries) and higher oil prices. Key Topics: The multilateral…

Some Emerging European States Need to Do More to Liberalise Energy Markets March 1, 2018  Claudia Patricolo Bulgaria, as well as non-EU member states including Albania, Bosnia and Ukraine still do not meet the requirements of the Third Energy Package for the liberalisation of the electricity and gas market. According to the European Commission, Bulgaria misapplied several of the requirements of the directive regarding the separation of networks from generation and supply activities and the separation of transmission system operators. “The Commission expects all member states to fully comply with the EU acquis, and, if necessary, we stand ready to offer technical assistance to our member states in order to ensure that they will meet those requirements,” Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, European Commission spokesperson for climate action and energy tells Emerging Europe. Energy can be an important engine in Albania

Energy can be an important engine in Albania’s economy as it has been in Norway for more than a century By Tirana Times, March 5, 2018 17:16 By Per Strand Sjaastad* Good energy policy is, basically, about ensuring sufficient and stable supply, at affordable prices in an efficient and competitive market, and – at the same time – without destroying the environment or the climate. The energy sector generates huge values in society. It also forms the basis for value creation in other industries. The value of energy production is dependent upon innovation, development, knowledge and a well-organized market. First a few words about my home country, Norway: Norway is one of the world´s largest energy producers. The development of Norway as an energy nation started more than hundred years ago.…

Lights on Women Published on 11th October 2017 As the energy sector continues to evolve, practitioners and academics are working to solve some of the most difficult challenges of our time. The sector needs a diverse talent pool, capable of bringing innovative and fresh perspectives to confront the disruptive challenges that lie ahead. Increasingly, women are taking on active roles in the energy sector using their knowledge and experiences to impact the competitiveness and future of the sector. However, statistics show that women only represent between 8% -15% of the total workforce in the European energy sector. Most women perform administrative and sales roles, with very few women employed in senior and mid-management positions. Efforts to address this gender disparity have been minimal. In fact, Ernst and Young report only…

European Private Energy Law: what is it, and why does it matter? Published on 13th February 2018ù Written by Lucila de Almeida The ‘Topic of the Month’ in February introduces the unusual and rather underexplored concept of European private energy law. It will do so in three blog posts over several weeks. This first will explain what European private energy law is, and why it matters, sharpening as it does our understanding of the role of public and private law in market engineering. The second will reconcile the measures of EU energy law with the concepts of private rights, procedures, and remedies. The third will focus on the most recent Clean Energy Package and show how European private energy law will be front and centre of the forthcoming legal framework, even…
