Informacion
Albania Builds on PENETRON for First Waste-to-Energy Plant, Geeks News Desk Jul. 24, 2017   Albania Builds on PENETRON for First Waste-to-Energy Plant in June 2017, inaugurated its first waste-to-energy plant in Elbasan, which will almost eliminate the community’s landfill problem. PENETRON ADMIX was used to treat concrete used for the plant’s below-ground structures. Located on the Shkumbin River in central Albania, Elbasan is one of the country’s largest cities (population 128,000) and also one of its most polluted. The city’s new waste-to-energy plant uses trash as a fuel for generating power, just as other power plants use coal, oil, or natural gas. The burning trash heats water into steam, which drives a turbine to create electricity. Generally, this process can reduce landfill volumes by up to 90% and will…

The politics of biodiversity and hydropower on ‘Europe’s, by freshwaterblog, July 11, 2017

Informacion
The politics of biodiversity and hydropower on ‘Europe’s last wild river’, freshwaterblog, July 11, 2017 After 20 years of postponement, an unfinished hydropower construction on the Vjosa River in Albania was cancelled earlier this year. The Vjosa is Europe’s last ‘wild’ large river, flowing entirely unobstructed through inaccessible gorges and enormous gravel banks and islands on a course of almost 270 kilometers from the Pindus Mountains to the Adriatic Sea. However, the river system is currently the subject of a number of hydropower constructions, which potentially threaten its rich – but little researched – biodiversity. The cancellation of the Kalivaç project in May was seen as positive news by environmental NGOs such as the Austrian-based RiverWatch who have long campaigned against hydropower developments on the Vjosa. However, shortly afterwards, the Albanian Ministry of Energy and Industry…
