Bulgaria joins WB6 regional electricity market integration initiative - all neighbouring EU countries are now on board! 18 May 2017 The Bulgarian national regulatory authority (Energy and Water Regulatory Commission), the Bulgarian transmission system operator (Electricity System Operator EAD) and the Bulgarian power exchange (Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange EAD) have formally declared their willingness to actively participate in the WB6 regional electricity market integration initiative. The new signatories of the WB6 Memorandum of Understanding will join the Programme Steering Committee on day-ahead market integration, whose task is to address all measures and steps needed for going-live of functioning day-ahead markets in and between the signatory countries. Multiconsult awarded further work on Devoll project, Albania, Water Power Magazine, 11 May 2017 Multiconsult has had its contract extended for work on the Moglicë Dam, a major part of the Devoll hydropower project in Albania.  Devoll Hydropower Sh.A (DHP), a company owned by Norwegian firm Statkraft AS, has awarded Multiconsult an extension to the supervision services assignment as an integrated part of the Owner’s Engineer’s Team for the project, located in the country’s southern region. Devoll consists of the Banjë and Moglicë hydropower plants. The construction of Banja Plant started in June 2013, with the project beginning operation in 2016. Regional integration open new perspectives for investments in Albania by Dr Lorenc Gordani on 11th May 2017 Albania is one of a few country, which due to its high hydro potential, based the electricity generation 100% in hydropower. However, 85% of all the existing hydropower plants were constructed by 1985 (under the central planning economy system), when the entire process of hydropower generation development - from initial idea, through detailed study, to construction - was coordinated by the vertically integrated power utility. After unbundling in 2004 and partial privatisation of electricity sector (distribution) in 2009, this planning, development and coordination role was not immediately taken over by other institutions, partly due to the lack of immediate demand for new generation facilities caused by a significant drop in electricity demand.
